Boston Bruins History And Tickets

Founded in 1924, the Boston Bruins have been making history on the ice that few teams can compare to. As members of the Northeast Division of the Eastern Conference of the National Hockey League (NHL), the Boston Bruins were the first team to enter the league in the United States expansion. As one of the original six teams, they were joined by the Detroit Red Wings, Montreal Canadiens, Chicago Blackhawks and Toronto Maple Leafs. Only one team holds more Stanley Cup awards than the Boston Bruins who have five; the Detroit Red Wings, who have 11.

The Boston Bruins got their start when Charles Adams, grocery tycoon, persuaded the NHL to let him start the first U.S. team on November 1, 124. Art Ross came up with the name for the team when directed by Adams to come up with a nickname that would make people think about the speed, agility and cunning of an untamed animal. Ross chose "Bruins" which is a word that was used to mean brown bears. Their first season, the Boston Bruins didn't get off to that great of a start but by the third season, noticeable improvement had taken place.

The 1928-29 season was played at Boston Garden, a venue built by Adams. In the next season, the Bruins had their best ever season where they won 38 of 44 games. This record still stands and although the Bruins lost the Stanley Cup to the Montreal Canadiens, it was a record breaking season that broke many team scoring records. The 1930's were a decade that the Bruins lead the standings for the entire league many times. It was also during this time that the Bruins changed their uniform colors to black and gold from brown and yellow. The Bruins also took home their third Stanley Cup in this particular decade.

When World War II came, the Bruins were heavily impacted as many players enlisted after the Stanley Cup win for the 1940-41 season. In the 1950's, the Bruins ownership changed hands when facing financial troubles. The new owner, Walter Brown was also the owner of the National Basketball Association's Boston Celtics and the Garden venue. After Brown's death in 1964, the Bruins were purchased back by previous owner Weston Adams. Also during this time, in 1958 to be specific, the first black person took to the ice on January 18.

The Bruins moved into expansion mode in the 60's and obtained forwards Ken Hodge, Phil Esposito and Fred Stanfield in one of hockey's most celebrated deals. These three help the Bruins to assail to new heights, include breaking the 100 point mark and making many other records in point scoring and goal scoring. In 1970, the Bruins finally won the Stanley Cup after a 29-year spell without. Esposito went on to win the Art Ross Trophy for four consecutive seasons. The seasons that followed were considered by many as lackluster compared to 1970, but still the Bruins merged forward with changes in players and management.

During the 80s and 90s the Bruins made it to the playoffs and experienced their last game at the Boston Garden in the 1995 season. The exception was 1997, which marked the first time in 30 years that the Bruins didn't make it to the playoffs. With a new coach in 2007, the next season the Bruins won 17 out of 20 games. Captain Zdeno Chara made the fastest NHL shot which registered at 105.4 miles per hour.

This year, the Bruins beat the Philadelphia Flyers at Fenway Park in a 2-1 OT decision to take home the 2010 NHL Winter Classic. Fans, players and staff alike are looking forward to great things from the Bruins.
