Even at the rec level, injury can occur. You might come across a nice deal on ebay but I often see street hockey there marketed as being safe for ice. Unless if it's CSA / HECC certified it's probably not safe, not for adult league anyway.
Goalie skates are a lot better than player ones, but can take awhile to get used to if you have only skated in regular ones. Don't forget breezers (padded shorts), either a padded neck protector or "dangler" (like a visor that hangs from your helmet) and a protective cup.
