Just a random nonplayoff related hockey history question?

I always wondered why goalies changed their equipment from wearing 2 identical gloves (similar to skater's gloves) to a blocker and catcher. What was the reason behind this? Did a goalie randomly say "Hey, I want a waffle board on my left hand and a baseball mitt on my other"?

it has to do with the rules change. Mostly, the goalies wanted to become like a MLB catcher. I think it is a great idea
